Coast Guards arrested for drug smuggling

Two Greek Coast Guards and three Albanian nationals were arrested on drug smuggling charges on Wednesday following a large-scale operation spreading from Piraeus to the Ionian island of Corfu.

An underwater operation carried out by Coast Guard divers on Wednesday in the sea area of Ftelia, between Corfu and Albania, led to the seizure of about 100 kilos of cannabis.

The two Coast Guards, one serving in the department’s special forces and a former colleague, were detained in separate places and denied any involvement in the drug-related case.

According to reports, the operation was organized after suspicious behavior by the two men led to the opening of their phone records and the police tracing phone convervations between them.
