Stranded on Gavdos

About 80 people have been stranded on Gavdos, Greece?s southernmost island, since October 31 because of a delay in signing a new contract for ferry services with Crete.

Residents, reports yesterday said, face a shortage in medicine, water, food and fuel. Only one emergency connection has been scheduled for the next 20 days.

Gavdos Mayor Stratis Lambakis on Thursday warned officials that growing isolation is driving the remaining population away from the tiny island.
