FinMin denies Papademos veto

Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos denied vetoying the appointment of Lucas Papademos as prime minister of an interim government in a statement issued on Wednesday.

Press reports had suggested that Venizelos blocked the former European Central Bank Vice President’s candidacy because Papademos wanted to replace him as finance minister. Venizelos denied this and said that he had actually proposed Papademos to be finance minister earlier this year.

Speaking of his appointment as finance minister Venizelos noted that he took on the job as an act of «national duty.»
