Russian film takes top prize

The Russian drama ?Twilight Portrait? won the Thessaloniki International Film Festival?s top award, the Golden Alexander, and a corresponding 20,000-euro cash prize at the 52nd TIFF, which concluded in the northern port city Sunday.

The film, directed by Angelina Nikonova (photo), tells the story of a young Russian woman raped by three policemen and offers a sharp critique on Russian society and police corruption.

The award for best director at the festival was scooped by the USA?s Mark Jackson for his film ?Without,? which follows a 19-year-old woman working as a temporary caregiver for an elderly man living in an isolated home.

The award for best actress went Stefania Goulioti, a seasoned theatrical performer, who starred in the film ?J.A.C.E.? — a modern take on the story of Oliver Twist — directed by Menelaos Karamaghiolis.
