Minister defends police restraint during unrest
Citizens? Protection Minister Christos Papoutsis defended himself on Thursday against criticism that the police adopted a passive stance during protests in Athens on Tuesday.
?I prefer to have some broken marble rather than broken heads,? Papoutsis told MPs in response to criticism that riot police stood by as rioters smashed marble steps and slabs to use as ammunition to throw at the officers. Papoutsis said that minimal damage was caused by rioters during protests to mark the third anniversary of the murder of teenager Alexis Grigoropoulos by a policeman.
