Cargo ship stranded off coast of Cyprus

Cypriot authorities said on Friday that a cargo ship had been stranded in rough weather off the island?s coast.

The Edro III, sailing under a Sierra Leonean flag, had departed from the southern port of Limassol for the Aegean island of Rhodes on Thursday but ran into trouble a few kilometers off the coast of Paphos.

A British helicopter, dispatched from Britain?s military base in Limassol, rescued seven of the nine-member crew — who are all Lebanese and Egyptian nationals.

Authorities said the captain and chief engineer stayed aboard the ship, which was to be towed back to port.
