Police detain human smuggler
Police in Elefsina, western Attica, said on Saturday that they had detained an Afghan national, believed to be a member of a major human trafficking ring, along with 26 compatriots he is believed to have been trying to smuggle into the country.
The would-be migrants had been crammed into the back of a van which the suspected smuggler had been planning to drive to the western port of Astakos before putting them onto a vessel bound for Italy, police said.
Another two suspected members of the smuggling ring are being sought.
