Questioning of witnesses in Vatopedi affair ends

Magistrate Eirini Kalou has finished questioning witnesses in the controversial property exchange between the state and the Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos.

Judicial sources said that the last witness to be questioned was businessman Athanasios Papistas, who has been charged with money laundering in connection to the purchase by the monastery of 64 plots of land around Thessaloniki.

Kalou, who questioned 32 witnesses, is due to hand the case file over to the council of appeals court judges, which will decide whether any of the suspects should be charged.

It has been alleged that the monastery obtained valuable real estate in return for land of lesser value during the swap.
