Municipalities to pay for untreated waste

Municipalities will soon take on the financial cost of failing to deal with untreated waste, according to a bill presented by Environment Minister Giorgos Papaconstantinou on Thursday.

The draft law gives central government the right to withhold funds from local authorities for allowing illegal dumps to operate in their areas. It also allows municipalities to charge individuals and firms for the processing of untreated waste.
