Police detain 79 at gambling den on Patission Street
In a raid late on Tuesday night — part of a widespread police operation to crack down on illegal gambling — officers arrested 79 people from one establishment alone on Patission Street.
The illegal casino was set up in the basement of a building on the busy central Athenian thoroughfare, where patrons gambled large amounts of cash in organized Texas hold?em poker games.
Of the 79 people arrested, one is the man believed to be the organizer and four others his employees.
Police also found 9,600 euros in cash and 4,300 euros in plastic betting chips.
