Greek owned vessel splits

A Greek-owned cargo vessel which had been wedged on a reef off the eastern coast of New Zealand for more than three months split in two amid stormy weather over the weekend, raising fears of a fresh oil spill.

The Liberian-flagged Rena had been stranded since early October when it ran aground, causing an oil spill which killed thousands of birds.

The Rena?s captain and navigation officer, both Filipinos, have been detained.
