Six immigrants rescued in Evros, another six missing
At least 6 people went missing after their boats capsized in the Evros river, on the border with Turkey, while trying to get to Greece, border police said Thursday.
Another 6 people, all of them illegal migrants from Bangladesh and Afghanistan, were rescued by the authorities. Police said the people, who had been carried away by the rushing waters of the river, were collected at different locations.
Greece has announced plans to build a 12km fence along part of its border with Turkey to prevent illegal immigrants from crossing. The government recently said more than 100,000 people had entered Greece illegally last year.
Athens has long complained to Turkey about border security.
