Arrests made at illegal trade sweep

A police officer was injured and 20 people were arrested during a sweep by police on Wednesday night against illegal traders doing business in front of the Athens University of Economics on Patission Street in central Athens, according to reports.

Police officers clashed with dozens of pedlars, most of African descent, who were displaying their wares — mainly knock-off handbags and wallets — on the sidewalk in front of the university, as well as with a group of people who emerged from the grounds of the university and attacked officers in defense of the traders.

Twenty suspects were arrested during the operation against the burgeoning illegal street trade, while one police officer sustained minor injuries.
