Thessaloniki businessman takes own life, gang link suspected

A Thessaloniki businessman committed suicide on Wednesday by jumping out of the window of his third-floor apartment.

The 58-year-old, who was not named, did not leave a note explaining why he wanted to take his own life, though police are investigating the possibility that his suicide is connected to a powerful usury racket that was busted last week, along with another three connected criminal organizations active in northern Greece.

According to initial reports, the deceased allegedly had ties with the man believed to be the brains behind the loan-sharking gang, which is suspected of being behind at least one more suicide.
