Policeman in Angelopoulos death describes accident

The off-duty policeman who was riding the motorcycle that on Tuesday night struck Theo Angelopoulos, causing the director fatal injuries, said on Thursday that the filmmaker had not been wearing a fluorescent bib like the rest of his crew.

Angelopoulos had been filming his latest movie in Drapetsona, near Piraeus, when the accident occurred.

The 24-year-old police special guard, who has not been named, told a prosecutor investigating the accident that he and his wife were traveling at a normal speed on the motorcycle.

He said that Angelopoulos had climbed over a crash barrier to cross the road when the accident occurred at about 7 p.m.

?All that I saw was a shadow,? the policeman is reported to have said.

?I am sorry for the death of Theodoros Angelopoulos, such an important man, but the accident was not my fault.?
