Police in Thessaloniki, in northern Greece, on Monday intercepted 26 undocumented migrants from Afghanistan and Pakistan traveling inside a cargo truck.
A 47-year-old truck driver from Georgia was also arrested on charges of smuggling illegal immigrants into the country.
Police were also looking for one more suspect, a Kurdish national, who allegedly received 1000 euros from each one of the immigrants to be secretly transported into Europe. Officers said the immigrants’ final destination was Germany.
Greece’s Citizens’ Protection Ministry says that nine out of ten immigrants use Greece as an entry point to get to Europe.
