Two drown as packed car falls into harbor

Two people drowned, trapped in their seats, when a car packed with seven women and children fell into the sea on the Ionian island of Lefkada on Sunday. Reports said the car, driven by Georgia Grapsa, 30, was going at some speed when it plunged off the waterfront in the village of Vassiliki, at the island’s southern end, on Sunday evening. No other vehicle was involved and Grapsa apparently lost control. The waterfront, which teems with coffee shops and restaurants, was crowded with people enjoying the spring sunshine, several of whom dived into the water to help the seven trapped passengers. Three children, aged 6, 9 and 11, were saved, as well as the driver and an 18-year-old girl. But Irene Kerpe, 16, and Evangelia Layiou, 44, were unable to free themselves from the vehicle and drowned.
