Olympic Stadium opens doors to Athens homeless

Homeless people looking to escape the cold snap in Athens will be able to find some respite at the city?s Olympic Stadium (OAKA), the management at the complex said on Wednesday.

A heated area at the OAKA press center has been made available to homeless people trying to escape the cold and strong winds. A fast food company said that it would provide food and drinks for anyone seeking shelter at the building in northern Athens.

In a statement, OAKA management said the facility would be available for as long as the cold weather lingers in Athens.

Municipal authorities and volunteers have stepped up their efforts to provide shelter to the capital?s growing homeless population as temperatures dipped below zero and gale force winds buffeted the city.

Well over half of the estimated 20,000 homeless people in Greece live in Athens.
