Police track down metal thieves

Police in Thessaloniki said on Wednesday that they caught 10 Bulgarian men red-handed as they stole railway tracks belonging to the Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE).

The suspects, aged 22 to 53, were charged with stealing the tracks so they could sell them as scrap metal.

Five men were also arrested in Imathia, northern Greece, for using a blowtorch to cut pieces of metal from the structure of a building so they could sell them to a scrap merchant.

Authorities said the suspects, aged 23 to 60, stole a total of 5.7 tons of metal from the steel structure of a building belonging to ATEbank.
