Ministry launches drugs disposal scheme

Greeks have some 1 billion euros? worth of expired drugs in their medicine cabinets, the Health Ministry said on Monday as it launched an initiative to collect these pharmaceuticals so they can be disposed of.

About 12,000 green recycling bins will be placed outside pharmacies around the country so citizens can discard their expired medicines safely.

The drugs will be collected and taken to the Institute of Pharmaceutical Research and Technology (IFET), which will arrange for them to be shipped abroad so they can be destroyed under safe conditions.
