Stricken cargo ship safely moored

A Greek-owned cargo ship that had issued a distress signal off the coast of Skyros on Tuesday night after being buffeted by gale force winds was safely moored on the island?s bay of Kalamitsa on Wednesday while its nine crew members were all said to be safe and well.

The Alexandros had issued an SOS signal some 10 kilometers northeast of Skyros on Tuesday night, prompting the dispatch of two Super Puma rescue helicopters and a C-130 transport aircraft which collected the crew members, seven Greeks and two foreign nationals.

The Alexandros had been en route to the central port of Volos from the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos with a cargo of salt when it ran into trouble off Skyros, in the central Aegean.
