Emergency measures to preserve power

The Environment and Energy Ministry on Wednesday ordered a ban on exports of electrical energy in order to avert a possible collapse of the national power system.

According to a statement signed by Deputy Minister Yiannis Maniatis, the ban was imposed due to the reduced capacity of thermal units and a ban by Bulgaria and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia on exports of electrical energy, on which Greece has partially relied.

The statement noted that Greece?s natural gas network was in ?a state of emergency? due to a lack of provisions and impact of extreme weather conditions. The lack of provisions is chiefly due to a halt in the flow of Azeri gas from Turkey.
