Spare parts salesman nabbed for major tax evasion

Police in Athens said on Wednesday that they had detained the 57-year-old manager of a company repairing cars and selling spare parts over unpaid taxes amounting to 1.2 million euros.

The 57-year-old, whose business is located in the western district of Aghioi Anargyroi, is the latest in a long list of suspects detained by the authorities in a bid to curb widespread tax evasion and raise much-needed revenue.

Hundreds of tax evaders were identified last month in a name-and-shame campaign by the Finance Ministry which has yet to collect the majority of the offenders? dues to the state.
