Historic monastery in Cyprus near collapse

The leader of Cyprus’ Orthodox Christian Church says a historic monastery where an apostle of Jesus Christ is said to have performed miracles is close to caving in and needs immediate repairs.

Archbishop Chrysostomos II urged pilgrims on Monday not to travel to the Apostolos Andreas ? or Saint Andrew ? monastery in the island’s Turkish-occupied northern sector for fear it could collapse.

The Archbishop said he would dispatch restoration crews to prop up the monastery’s crumbling central archway if Turkish Cypriot so-called authorities didn’t act fast.

Turkish Cypriot «official» Kudret Ozersay said the so-called authorities were keen to protect the island’s cultural heritage and a restoration program was under way.
