Serbs arrested on Monday believed to be Pink Panthers

Two men arrested on Monday in the Athens suburb of Kallithea are suspected of being members of an international jewel thief ring which has been dubbed the ?Pink Panthers,? according to reports.

The two Serbian men, aged 20 and 36, were spotted by DIAS motorcycle-riding officers in Kallithea wearing wigs and allegedly staking out a jewelry store they were planning to hold up.

When officers approached the pair, the 36-year-old made off, but was found a few minutes later hiding in the entrance to an apartment building. The suspect shot at the policemen, injuring one officer lightly, before being overpowered and taken into custody.

The 20-year-old was arrested on the spot.

Police also arrested a 43-year-old Serbian woman in the northern suburb of Holargos on charges of being an accomplice.
