Athenians are happy with metro

Nearly 82 percent of all Athenians are happy with the capital’s underground railway, which they find clean, fast and reliable, according to a poll made public yesterday. However, in the survey, conducted by the Institute for Economic and Industrial Research (IOVE) – in cooperation with the European Organization for Quality – respondents also expressed a strong desire for new extensions that would carry the metro to the city suburbs. Even then, 79.5 percent of the 1,000 people polled said they were satisfied with the extent of the metro network and plans for new lines. The IOVE survey found the Athens metro to be by far the most popular public service in Greece, as well as the most popular in Europe. Athenians marked the railway – which came into operation in late January 2000 – with 9.5 out of 10 for cleanliness, 9.4 for speed, 9.1 for frequency of trains, 9.1 for metro personnel appearance and service, 8.9 for security and 8.7 for passenger information facilities. The overall approval rating was 81.8 percent.
