University tries to clean up area around law school

The possibility of Athens University law students holding lectures outdoors is one of the initiatives being considered to deter drug addicts and street vendors from gathering outside the Law School.

The measures are due to be discussed Wednesday at a meeting between Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis and the head of the Law School, Theodoros Fortsakis. Among the other ideas that have been suggested are to hold regular cultural events on the pedestrianized area around the university building in central Athens.

Sources said that the majority of students have expressed support for initiatives that would make the surrounding area safer, as it has become a magnet for drug users and street traders who often seek refuge from police officers in the Law School. Supreme Court prosecutor Yiannis Tentes on Tuesday launched an investigation into complaints about criminal activity around the school and it is thought that the police will soon mount an operation to clear the area.
