Unknown group claims arson attack on Greek politician’s office

A previously unknown group calling itself Proletariat Self-defense Groups on Thursday claimed responsibility for an arson attack on the office of the Justice Ministry’s general secretary for transparency, Giorgos Sourlas, on Monday, which caused significant damage and injured one woman, and another two bloodless attacks on offices of the Environment Ministry and the Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research (IOBE) in Athens on the same day.

In a proclamation uploaded onto the Internet, the group said it targeted Sourlas as “the political representatives of the Justice Ministry and judges are responsible for the violent suppression of demonstrations, the criminalization of union action and the workers’ struggles.”

The other two hits were carried out in solidarity with residents of Halkidiki, in northern Greece, who have been protesting a local mining initiative, the group said.
