Minister seeks new talks with seamen ahead of strike

Development Minister Anna Diamantopoulou is attempting to secure a new meeting with seamen on Wednesday in a bid to convince them to call of their plans for a strike next week.

The Panhellenic Seamen?s Union (PNO), which has held several walkouts in recent months, is protesting the government?s plans to merge its health service provider with the state?s main healthcare provider (EOPYY). There are also concerns about seamen?s pensions.

PNO plans for its members to walk off the job on Tuesday and Wednesday next week, which is Holy Week for Orthodox Christians. If it goes ahead, the action is expected to cause serious disruption to travelers? plans to reach the islands.

Representatives from the tourism industry have pleaded with PNO to call of its strike but the union says it is not satisfied with the government?s response.
