Gov’t officials appeal to seamen over strike plans

Government officials on Wednesday tried to talk seamen out of striking Tuesday and Wednesday next week, action which is expected to disrupt travelers? plans during Holy Week.

The Panhellenic Seamen?s Union (PNO) is protesting government plans to merge its health service provider with the state?s main healthcare provider (EOPYY).

Development Minister Anna Diamantopoulou on Wednesday tried to secure a new meeting with seamen in a bid to convince them to call off the planned strike.

Talking to Skai on Wednesday, Culture Minister Pavlos Geroulanos also appealed to PNO, saying the action would hurt Greek families that depend on tourism for their economic survival.
