Justice Minister Papaioannou won’t stand in elections

Justice Minister Miltiadis Papaoioannou announced late on Thursday that he would not be putting his name on PASOK’s ballot in upcoming general elections, expected to take place in early May.

Papaioannou made his announcement following a meeting with the head of the Socialist party, Evangelos Venizelos.

The 65-year-old lawyer and politician has been with PASOK since its foundation in 1981.

He is one of several veteran PASOK MPs who have said they will not be standing as a candidate in the next general elections, the most high profile of which is Theodoros Pangalos, who served in this administration as deputy prime minister.
