Bill to relieve indebted households ‘on hold’

Legislation aimed at easing the burden faced by heavily indebted Greek households is to be discussed soon, state television channel Net reported, noting that Wednesday?s Cabinet session would be dominated by the topics of snap polls, expected to be announced later in the day, and the recapitalization of Greek banks.

Late on Tuesday Labor and Social Insurance Minister Giorgos Koutroumanis had announced that talks with officials of the European Central Bank, one of Greece?s three foreign creditors, on the issue of regulating the debts of Greek households had concluded ?successfully.?

Koutroumanis gave no details about the agreement reached but described as a ?tragic irony? the fact that there would not be enough time for the legislation to be submitted and approved in Parliament before the House is dissolved ahead of early elections.

The minister said that the reforms might be passed with an emergency government decision.
