Part of a hoard of 1,019 illegally excavated ancient artifacts seized in Crete on Tuesday were presented yesterday by police, who announced the arrest of three suspected smugglers. The antiquities date from Minoan to Roman times, and include a bronze statuette (r), weapons, terracotta figurines and a large number of clay lamps (l). Police say the suspects were trying to sell the finds, whose provenance is unclear, to a foreign collector.
