Coast guard rescues 151 immigrants from boat

Coast guard officers rescued 151 undocumented immigrants from a boat that ran aground off an islet near Elafonissos, off the Peloponnese, on Saturday evening.

The migrants were taken off the boat and transported to a nearby school, where authorities are checking their identities. It is thought the immigrants are from a number of countries, including Afghanistan, Pakistan and some North African states.

Authorities believe they were attempting to reach Italy.

Meanwhile, a 33-year-old Turkish national was arrested in northeastern Greece while trying to unload five illegal immigrants on the Greek side of the Evros River. Another suspected trafficker managed to escape, authorities said.
