UN inspectors green-light immigrant detention camp

A team of inspectors from the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) on Tuesday gave their approval to the detention center for undocumented migrants, which began operating in Amygdaleza, northwest of Athens, on Sunday.

According to reports, the UNHCR inspectors were given a tour by police of the facility — which is expected to house a total of 1,200 migrants by mid-May who will be processed for deportation — and found it to meet international detention standards.

Citizens? Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis has said that additional centers are to open in different parts of the country and that they are expected to help solve Greece’s illegal immigration problem.
