Civil service evaluation on ice
An ambitious plan to evaluate Greece?s civil servants, which had been scheduled to begin after the elections as the first step in overhauling the country?s bloated public administration, has been put on hold amid the current political upheaval.
According to a plan hashed out between officials of the Administrative Reform Ministry and representatives of Greece?s foreign creditors, civil servants were to start sitting written examinations and face personal evaluations by their supervisors immediately after snap polls. The results of these tests were to form the basis of an ?overhaul? of the civil service.
Minister Dimitris Reppas never explicitly linked the evaluation process to the thousands of layoffs that creditors have demanded. But authorities have also been told to abolish and merge dozens of state agencies, which would clearly lead to job cuts. This process has also been put on hold as party leaders scramble to form a new government.
