Trial-fixing cleric’s jail term commuted, lawyer exonerated
An Athens appeals court on Wednesday commuted a nine-year jail term meted out to archimandrite Iakovos Yiosakis, one of several suspects implicated in a trial-fixing ring in 2005, to a suspended 14-month jail term.
Yiosakis had appealed his sentence after being found guilty of money laundering and fraud. His appeal was based on the fact that fraud has been categorized as a misdemeanor under a new law and as such has expired under the statute of limitations.
Meanwhile Sakis Kehagioglou (photo), one of several lawyers implicated in the trial-fixing ring, was exonerated.
He had been sentenced to a six-year jail term.
