Court rules for migrant detention center

A new temporary detention center for undocumented migrants in Amygdaleza, northwest of Athens, is to continue operating after an Athens court on Wednesday rejected an appeal against the facility by local municipal authorities.

Another legal appeal that the Municipality of Acharnon has lodged against Citizens? Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis is to be heard on June 27.

According to sources, the municipality claims that the plot on which the migrant center is operating is its own property.

Local residents have protested vehemently against the operation of the center since it opened at the end of April. Authorities have insisted that it does not pose a security threat as it is located next to a police training facility.

Last month a team of inspectors from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) found that the center broadly met international detention standards.
