Anti-racism group expresses Chrysi Avgi fears to Barroso

The European Network Against Racism (ENAR) sent a letter on Tuesday to European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, expressing concern about the entry into Greece?s Parliament of the extreme-right Chrysi Avgi (Golden Dawn).

The group said it was particularly worried about the development in view of the involvement of members of Chrysi Avgi in racist attacks on immigrants and members of ethnic minority groups.

Meanwhile the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki issued a statement condemning claims by the party?s leader, Nikos Michaloliakos (photo, right), according to which Nazi concentration camps did not use ovens and gas chambers to kill prisoners during the Holocaust.

The claims ?are not grounded in historical fact? and ?provoke fanaticism, bigotry and racism,? the statement said.
