Three races, a bicycle round and a saint’s day to wreak traffic havoc on Sunday

A number of events taking place in Attica on Sunday will provide entertainment for spectators and a nightmare for motorists as several routes will be affected throughout the region.

In central Athens, the the first Half-Marathon will coincide with the Athens Fun Run 2012, organized by the City of Athens, meaning that streets will be closed in and around the city center from 6 a.m. until mid-afternoon.

Marathon, Pallinis, Mesogeion, Kifissias and Vassileos Georgious avenues will be closed off in sections from early on Sunday as the 33rd Peace Marathon, dedicated to resistance hero Grigoris Lambrakis,, get under way.

The 18th Bicycle Tour of Greece, meanwhile, will be coming through Attica as well, interrupting the flow of traffic on the national highway from Corinth to Athens, then coming through past Elefsina, onto Iera Odos, Athinon Avenue, Karaiskaki Square, Pireos Street and Omonia Square, before terminating at Kotzia Square, in front of City Hall.

The Athens-Lavrio highway will also see interruptions in the flow of traffic as the suburb of Markopoulo in northeastern Attica celebrates on Sunday and Monday its patron saint, Constantinos.
