Publisher Kouris handed suspended sentence for libel

An Athens misdemeanors court on Monday handed a two-year suspended jail sentence to Giorgos Kouris, the owner of Avriani newspaper and the now defunct Alter television channel, after finding him guilty of libeling the managing director of the Skai media group, Yiannis Alafouzos.

The Skai owner sued Kouris over an article in Avriani in June 2011 deemed to be libelous and insulting to Alafouzos.

The editor-in-chief of Avriani, Giorgos Tsirogiannis, received the same sentence.

Kouris faces trial next month in connection with an unpaid tax bill of some 300,000 euros.
