Commuter pickpocketing ring busted
Police in Athens on Friday arrested a group of four Romanian men believed to be behind a string of robberies on public transport, chiefly on city buses, in recent weeks.
The four suspects are believed to have acted with another four compatriots, who are being sought by police, to pickpocket commuters on buses, trolley buses and on the Athens metro.
According to the police, the perpetrators would board the same bus or metro carriage and operate as a team to elude being spotted. One suspect would swipe the wallet of an unsuspecting commuter and pass it to a second suspect who would relay it to third. He in turn would pass it to the fourth ring member who would press the button to secure their escape at the next station.
