Pensioner, 62, hangs self in forest
A 62-year-old pensioner hanged himself on Wednesday in a small forest on the outskirts of Nikaia, near the port of Piraeus, in a suicide that appears to have been prompted by despair over financial woes.
Police were called to the scene by shocked local residents who saw the man hanging from a tree on their way to work in the morning.
According to sources, the 62-year-old left a note explaining that financial problems had driven him to take his own life.
Figures released earlier this month show that suicides increased by 22 percent between 2009 and 2011, as the repercussions of the debt crisis began to be felt.
