Tax evasion arrests reach 499

According to Greek police reports the number of people arrested on charges of alleged tax evasion has so far reached 499 — according to police figures, about a dozen businessmen and businesswomen are arrested around the country every day.

In Athens, 176 people were arrested for debts amounting to 459 million euros, while in Thessaloniki 143 were arrested for owing the state some 60 million euros. In the rest of the country, police forces arrested 180 people with debts reaching 158 million euros.

Authorities calculate that all together those arrested owe the state the sum of 677 million euros.
