Forest fires raze land, no injuries

Dozens of firemen were battling major forest fires on Sunday, several in different parts of Attica and two in Corinth, as strong winds and dry conditions hampered their efforts.

Several water-dropping aircraft and helicopters were dispatched to help firefighters on the ground and Italian authorities sent two Canadair craft.

There had been no reports of any injuries by late yesterday and no houses had been burned, although several warehouses were said to have been destroyed by fires that had approached residential areas in Keratea and Palaia Fokaia, southeastern Attica, after breaking out on Saturday.

The Keratea fire, believed to have been ignited by a spark from workers who had been welding, was brought under control. Firefighters also doused blazes near Marathon and Kalamos, north of Athens. Five people were detained in connection with the Marathon and Keratea fires.

A fire also broke out near Pallini, eastern Athens, and two more near the villages of Stefani and Sofiko near Corinth.
