Church reacts to Thessaloniki Gay Pride

The bishopric of Thessaloniki is opposing plans for the city to hold its first-ever Gay Pride march this Friday and Saturday, calling it ?immoral? and summoning the residents of the northern port city to protest the event, which is upheld in most cities of Europe to campaign against discrimination.

?This event is unacceptable for the morals and traditions of this city,? the bishopric said in a statement released on Thursday. ?We know that the the citizens, men and women, and especially the young people of our city, have said that they will react intensly to such an immoral parade anywhere in our city.?

Thessaloniki?s first Gay Pride event is scheduled to begin with a speech at 7 p.m. on Friday at Emboriou Square and culminate with the obligatory parade on Saturday night.
