Samaras to leave hospital later in the day

Greece’s new prime minister is expected to be released from hospital later in the day, after undergoing eye surgery over the weekend that will prevent him from traveling to a critical European Union summit in Brussels this week.

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras was recovering from an operation to repair a detached retina, and was expected to leave hospital Monday afternoon.

He has appointed Foreign Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos to lead the Greek delegation at the June 28-29 summit. Avramopoulos met Monday morning with outgoing Finance Minister Giorgos Zanias, Development Minister Costis Hatzidakis and others who will accompany him to Brussels.

Meanwhile, the country’s designated finance minister remains hospitalized after collapsing on Friday. [AP]
