Police arrest 23 gang members

Police in Kavala, northern Greece, have arrested 23 suspected members of one of the most notorious criminal gangs in the region, involved in numerous cases of theft and other types of criminal offenses.

The 23 men are to face a prosecutor on charges of being members of a criminal gang, police said in a press conference on Tuesday.

Officers said three of the detainees, two 24-year-olds and a 37-year-old, played leading roles in the gang. None of them had a criminal record. A lawyer and a special guard are also said to be members. The suspects, who include ethnic Greeks and at least one foreigner, have not been identified.

Since April last year, the Kavala-based gang has carried out a number of bank robberies, blown up ATMs, and opened fire on police officers. It is implicated in drugs and weapons trafficking too. It?s total loot is estimated at 450,000 euros, police said.

Police seized four Kalashnikov weapons, six pistols, six rifles, one automatic submachine gun and explosives.
