Officer hurt after Kifissia hostage-taking [UPDATE]

A policeman was injured in the leg following an exchange of fire with would-be burglars outside the home of PAOK soccer team coach Giorgos Donis in the affluent northern Athens suburb of Kifissia on Thursday afternoon.

It is the second time that Donis’ home has been targeted by burglars.

Police said that one of the two burglars — who were wearing bullet-proof vests — was injured in the arm in the crossfire. Officers arrested the injured gunman while the second perpetrator was said to have hidden in an abandoned building near Donis’ home.

According to sources, the three men tried to break into the soccer coach’s home but were spotted by police patrolling the area. The burglars reportedly took Donis’ father-in-law hostage for a few minutes and tried to use him as a human shield to make their escape. A police helicopter was initially dispatched to help with the search.
