Athens man takes his own life over eviction [Update]

In the latest dramatic suicide linked to the economic crisis, a pensioner in the Athens neighborhood of Galatsi jumped to his death on Friday when a bailiff came to deliver him official notice of his eviction from his apartment.

According to authorities, the 65-year-old man, who was not named, refused to open his apartment door when the bailiff knocked, and threatened to jump from the balcony if he did not go away. The judicial official attempted to calm the man down but the pensioner jumped from the third-floor property. He died instantly.

Neighbors told Kathimerini that the 65-year-old had been unable to pay his rent for several months.

A day earlier, a 42-year-old man died after falling from the hill of the Acropolis. The man, an ATEbank employee, did not leave a note but authorities are treating the incident as a suicide.
